Sargeant Shriver National Center on Poverty Law 50th Anniversary

Sargeant Shriver National Center on Poverty Law is celebrating it's 50th anniversary. Over the course of the next year, our fig films team will be creating films to inspire the next group of lawyers, advocates and volunteers to continue fighting the fight to end poverty. In preparation for the launch of their 50th anniversary campaign, the fig team had the opportunity to interview two of Sargeant Shriver's children to discuss the legacy of their father's work and what they think is next. We filmed Timothy Shriver in Chicago and flew out to Santa Monica to film Maria Shriver.

All filming took place before the 2016 United States Presidential election.

In the wake of the rapid changes our country faces and the awakening of it's citizens, the Shriver Center was emboldened to offer hope and a solution to those looking to create real change. The fig team adjusted their initial messaging to fit that spirit.

The result is a film that resonates with our current climate and calls to the heart of those that still believe that poverty can be eradicated. Our team was inspired hearing from both Maria Shriver and Timothy Shriver. We can't wait to share more from their interviews.

Your work is beautiful and inspiring.
— Maria Shriver

Our team had just 24 hours to fly into Santa Monica, get our interview with Maria Shriver and fly back home. We had just 40 minutes to set up, interview and break down our gear at Maria's offices. Eeeek! We had 15 minutes to soak our toes in the ocean before flying back home.

Erie Neighborhood House; From Where I Stand

We love it! It’s so warm and full of hope—exactly what we need right now. Utilizing Brianna’s voice was a brilliant move on your part and I think people will be enamored by both her confidence and graciousness. Thank you!
— Brian Paff, Director of Marketing and Communications Erie House

We're so excited for you to meet Brianna Vargas-Gonzalez, a remarkable young leader in our Expanded Learning Programs for Children and Youth, and hear her story at the 2017 Future of Promise Awards Dinner.

This is our sixth project with Erie Neighborhood House and we could not be prouder of the direction for this years film. Fig director Melissa Fox collaborated with Erie House and Brianna to write a script about the resilient spirit of the immigrant community that Erie serves. From Where I Stand, follows Brianna Vargas, the perfect example of a woman who has used the resources in front of her to elevate herself through hard work, determination and resilience. A first generation immigrant, Brianna and her siblings will be the first in her family to graduate college. We are inspired by Brianna's mission to be a writer and our director insisted that she write part of the film. The teaser received over 20K views on Facebook and Erie House was contacted by a Univision producer to do a feature on Brianna. After the film screened Brianna walked up to the stage to a standing ovation and assisted in a paddle raise that brought in $90,000.00 at the event.
