HOW WE WORK
Two words: Be yourself.
When it comes to your wedding, these two words could not be truer. (Oh, and there is that "I do" statement as well.)
Personalization is key. This isn't a fast food chain we are running here. This is your wedding. We will get to know you and will collaborate with you on the music, flow, and other details. Your music for the evening is an amazing way for you to integrate your personal taste and make your event special and unique. We work with you to understand what gives you all the feels—from songs you grew up with, favorite soundtracks, and current/past jams—and everything in between. We curate the night and the vibe of each portion of the evening, from the pre-ceremony to the cocktails, to dinner and dancing; each time frame is an opportunity to include your taste and personalize further. We collect your must-plays, do-not-plays and special songs to come up with a vision for the day. We then expand on what/how you want your evening to sound based on our professional knowledge.
You may still have questions about how we do what we do and the like.
No sweat—we got answers. Here are some FAQs for your perusal:
WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE LEVEL OF YOUR DJ TEAM? . . .
All of our DJs share a love and passion for music, but we know that the success of a DJ at a private event goes beyond the music. Fig has an extensive training program for our resident team. Your DJ has worked very hard to be leading your event! Fig’s founders have 40+ years of training in social & emotional intelligence and use this to create the best platform for success. Training for our DJ team includes:
- understanding and executing your vision
- building rapport with you, your guests, your event team, and your room
- sequencing the flow of an event successfully
- hosting excellently
- distinguishing between demographics on a dance floor and adjust accordingly
- mixing, beat matching, and transitioning smoothly between songs
- setting up the best soundscape for an event
- making your dance floor come alive
We also have bi-monthly meetings led by our manager, Brent Rolland, and team to dissect and discuss all past and upcoming events. We use this time to review what worked what didn't so that we can improve. We love and value group learning. And coffee, for that matter.
WHAT IS IN YOUR DJ PACKAGE? . . .
Our packages include up to six hours of playtime with an early load in and sound check. We provide music for cocktails, dinner, dancing and the basic sound equipment w/microphone. We can also provide music and mic’s for ceremony!
HOW DOES THE DJ WORK AT MY EVENT? . . .
We think of ourselves as team players! We are absolutely a crucial part of the success of your day, but we aren’t a solo act. We work closely with your planner, catering manager, photographer, filmmaker, and all vendors to assure the success of everyone. Examples: We make sure your photographer/filmmaker is ready before we make announcements, and we follow the catering manager's/planner's cue on speeches, so we aren’t interrupting service. These small details make a big difference in the flow of your event.
HOW DO I CHOSE MY DJ? . . .
ARTIST PACKAGE: You pick the DJ! This package is great for clients whom get referred to a specific DJ or want to choose their DJ from the start! We understand some clients are very specific and prefer to work with a specific person from start to finish. In our artist package, you can pay an added artist rate to reserve one of our talented DJ’s from the start and work with them through the entire process. This is great for clients with a specific music direction, specific cultural requests, or really like a particular DJ.
RESIDENT PACKAGE: We handpick the DJ for you! In our initial meeting, we will review with you your overall vision for your wedding, your vision, taste in music, & other aspects you are looking for in a DJ. We explain our process & you get a great idea of how a DJ will work at your event. We don’t jump to assign the DJ when you book with us, we instead allow you time to come up with a must play list, a list of general likes and vibe for each section of the wedding and of course add to our do not play list. We then use this info to pair you up with the best matched DJ. This method works very well, bc instead of getting matched you with a random DJ, you are connected with a great fit! You of course will get to meet the DJ closer to your event to review all of the details and make sure they are the right fit. This is a great option if you are looking to work with Fig in general and also the best price for your budget.
HOW LONG HAS FIG DJ BEEN IN BUSINESS? . . .
25 years. Our founder James Gustin has been spinning songs for over 25 years. James and wife & co-owner Michele, are the best at developing talent and have trained over 50 DJs. Today we have a strong team of ten DJs with unique personalities and talents, but a common core of strategy and approach to events. Three of our team members have been exclusive to the fig residency program for the past 10 years. We can proudly say we have a hardworking, good willed, talented team!
WHAT VENUES DO YOU WORK AT? . . .
If you name a venue in Chicago, we have mostly likely played there (this is not an alternative fact.) Our team DJs for hundreds of events a year, so that allows us to cover a lot of ground. We play at five-star hotels, loft spaces, museums, restaurants, and beyond. Most of our events are in downtown Chicago and we also travel nationally and internationally. We have also held several team residencies & partnerships with Smart Bar, W Hotels, Rockit, Dana Hotel, Headquarters, the Flamingo Rum Club, the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, and Celeste, to name a few.
WHAT DOES THE DJ SETUP LOOK LIKE? DO YOU BRING LIGHTING? . .
We like our DJ setups like a Tesla: Clean with a good engine. (Elon Musk, we hope you are reading this.) Our setups are minimal with pro-DJ gear and a great sound system. We do not bring lights, as we focus on the sound in the room.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE REQUESTS? . . .
We kindly take all requests—we just don’t promise we will play them. We are more than happy to receive the requests of your guests, but we will only play them if they fit your vision and we think they will work. Tell Aunt Bippy and Grandma Gertie to be on their best behavior.
